Thoughts about “normal” Christianity

So I read Mel’s post (the reblogged post) and this was soon followed by a few Facebook posts by Kris Vallotton (also below) about “normal Christianity” to include the miraculous. This is hotly debated topic in our house that gets discussed frequently.

The truth is, we don’t live in the miraculous like I hear some talking about. This is not our experience. I guess I’m aware of people who see miracles and God answering prayers like crazy (one of whom is Francis Chan who wrote “Crazy Love” – others include Bill Johnson and Kris Vallotton of Bethel Church).

So why don’t I experience what they do? Why don’t I feel like I have much clout with God? He doesn’t answer my prayers for healing… or does he?

Last Fall I was dreading the allergy season. I basically have a really bad stuffy head sinus cold for a month and a half. I felt the symptoms coming on and prayed real hard and the symptoms went away. I was fine. But, as I told someone just the other day, that the ragweed or “whatever” must not have been bad last year. I said it could be the prayers but I don’t know.

So why is this where my spirituality is at? Because I don’t experience what Kris Vallotton or Mel Wild talks about… but I want to. I think.

The Bible tells us to earnestly desire spiritual gifts. Just like learning to play guitar, you have to want it… and then you gotta practice.

So instead of actually applying myself to this end, I apply myself to finishing the Breaking Bad episodes on Netflix (or any dynamic equivalent of what amounts to a detrimental use of my most precious commodity – my time!)

Here is a story of my one bonafide without-a-doubt experience of being used by God to heal someone:

My mom had just come home from oral surgery. It was a particularly painful operation and the dentist had told my mom that patients have left him for good because of the pain of this operation. She came home expressed her concern and asked me to pray for her. In that moment I felt the powerful presence of God. His compassion. His decision to heal. His “unction” (kind of an old word but it came to mind). So I prayed, or rather cooperated with his prayer flowing through me.

My mom experienced no pain much to the astonishment of the dentist. He questioned me about it next time I was in to see him myself it became obviously apparent to him that it wasn’t because I was anything special. As I have said a hundred times in this blog. I never felt like I was a very good Christian… But, as Rick Warren states in the first chapter of his book, “Purpose Driven Life”: It’s Not About You!

So, based on Scripture and the encouragement of these dear brothers I am encouraged that I “can” pursue spiritual gifts and experiences of God and begin to experience them. Anybody else want to join me?

Now for those Kris Valloton quotes:

If someone teaches that there are no longer gifts of the Spirit…prophecy, healing, deliverance are not for today…all spiritual experiences and/or supernatural encounters have passed; Are not these people false teachers? Is it not just as dangerous to remove the power of God from the people of God, as it is to be deceived? In fact, isn’t this deception?

Paul warned Timothy about these people when he said, “But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come…people will “hold to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.” (2 Timothy 3:1, 5)

You must demonstrate the power of a superior kingdom with signs and wonders, to fully preach the the gospel.

“In the power of signs and wonders, in the power of the Spirit; so that from Jerusalem and round about as far as Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.” (Romans 15:19)

There is two ways to read the scriptures, I can reduce the bible down to my own experience. For example, I read Mark 16:17-18, where Jesus says miracles follow those who BELIEVE. Then I say, “Well I believe and I don’t see miracles, therefore that verse must only apply to 1st century believers.

Or the other way to read the scriptures is to change my experience to meet the standards and expectations of bible. Of course this requires a high level of courage and it is much easier to be complacent, and reduce the scriptures to soothe my conscience.

Aimee_AMA_approvalWhile we were in Los Angeles last week, I got a chance to tour the former parsonage of Aimee Semple McPherson, the founder of the denomination I belong to (Foursquare). As I was looking at some of the memorabilia of her prolific, larger than life ministry, I came upon the sign in the photo.

This sign is from a report by the San Francisco American Medical Association.

Redeemed, Song and Story

Redemption is such a beautiful thing! I absolutely love the idea that any prodigal can come home to find Papa running to meet them. He embraces everyone who comes to him and showers them with affection and fatherly love. All of heaven rejoices! This is the very heart of God. Redemption is the heartbeat of heaven.

Jesus has said, “”It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:31-32 ESV)

Again, Jesus told a story to illustrate this in Luke 15 after he is “maligned” by the religious leaders who said, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them”.

Well, actually he tells three stories. Each story increasingly emphasizes the value of what has been lost and then found. The story of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and finally the lost son. I don’t know how many times I have cried at the story of the prodigal son.

I remember on one occasion I was reading Luke 15 at a nursing home and when I came to the verse where the Father says, “Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” Jesus stood right in front of me and looked me in the eyes. He was speaking those words to my heart… and yes, I cried.

Psalm 107 is full of stories of people being redeemed and rescued as they simply call on the Lord for help. I hope this song, which is based on Psalm 107 blesses you and spiritually enriches your life!

Thanks for listening! Leave me a comment to let me know how this has touched your life!

ps. Take a moment to read Luke 15 again… and again!

Hallelujah, Sung by Emma

womanwashingjesusfeetJesus was once having dinner with a religious leader when suddenly, in walks a woman who had a reputation for living a sinful life. She is at Jesus feet, sobbing. She washes Jesus feet with her tears and dries them with her hair, kisses his feet and anoints them with perfume.

It was an incredible humbling and extravagant act of gratitude. She had found redemption. She had found grace. She had found forgiveness. (Read the full story below)

I have been sharing this story for a month or more at my nursing home concerts. This story inspired a new verse to a song that I have been singing to my girls for the past several months. It is extremely popular around our house and currently my two year old’s favorite song. I am sure you know it as well. “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen.

There is hardly a day that goes by that my Emma doesn’t ask me to sing this song to her. Sometimes she drags my guitar or Ukulele across the room to have me play it for her.

Here is the new verse:

“Those who’ve been forgiven more,
respond with love to the Lord,
So remember all the grace He’s given to ya.
He pursues you when you go astray,
When you choose wrong and lose your way
Forgiveness gives you back your Hallelujah!”

I love those last few lines and have felt the Holy Spirits smile and presence at times when I sing it. Forgiveness gives you back your Hallelujah!

From the Gospel of Luke:

Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman

“When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”

40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”

“Tell me, teacher,” he said.

41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”

43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”

“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.

44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”

48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”

49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”” (Luke 7 NIV)

For the Grieving Mother

I am reposting this for Mothers day. May it be the best yet even if you have “lost” a baby, though no baby is ever lost. They just get raised in heaven by the angels. Trust Jesus with your child and with your grief. I pray tremendous comfort and much love for you this Mothers day.

A few weeks before Mother’s day 2011, I experienced one of the most amazing and powerful dreams I have ever had. I experienced this after specifically praying for a dream from God. Since sharing it I have been so blessed by the response.

The dream:

My extended family and I sat around a campfire one night at a family reunion. We were all enjoying each others company and having a great time. Everyone, that is, except Jenny (not her real name). We could all tell that something was weighing her down but didn’t know exactly what it was. Finally, she opened up. We all listened as she poured out her grief and heartache about losing her baby in a miscarriage. I wanted to hear what she was saying so I moved to sit on a bench opposite her.

While she talked, trying to make sense of her experience, the most amazing thing happened. I actually began to “see” her baby. A hologram suddenly appeared right next to Jenny. It was her baby… in the womb.

baby in womb photo: child3.jpg I watched as within a matter of 10 or 12 seconds a baby girl, starting out so small, grew and developed, struggled for life, and then, with a sigh, gave up her spirit back to God.

As this scene unfolded before my eyes this little girl “spoke” to me, expressing her thoughts to me from heaven. In those moments, she told me that she wanted her mom to know that she was all right. She wanted her mom to know how special it was to hear her sing and how she missed that. She really wanted to hear her sing again. She desperately wanted her mom to experience joy again.

And then, just as quickly as the vision appeared, this precious little girl’s body shriveled and collapsed in a heap of bones and the vision disappeared. (At first I really didn’t want to include that last part about the bones but I felt it was significant. I understood this to mean that since she had a body, she also will participate in the resurrection. I’m not sure why, but that means something.)

I don’t know why I was shown all this. But I believe I was shown this for a reason. I sensed that it was important to share this with all mothers who have lost a child.

If you are a hurting mother reading this right now I pray that you would sense God comforting your heart. Your baby is alive and well with God. Right now God is loving your child and your child is loving him. Both of them want you to know joy again.

Here is a poem I wrote for you entitled “For the Grieving Mother”. I pray that it blesses you and brings you peace, healing and comfort.

 “For the Grieving Mother”

What use are words in times of such grief?
What can I say to bring you some relief?
Your little girl, the hope, the promise, gone away
A little life returns to God, O what can I say?
What can I say?

There are no words for this pain you carry now,
Instead of joy you just simply wonder how,
How you’ll make it one more day,
And you are slowly losing faith,
That you will ever be all right again,
But I can hear her say…

“I want you to know that I am more than just okay
Please let the songs of heaven, fill your heart today
God wasn’t cruel to take me home, I am happy in his arms
And one day soon we’ll meet again and never be apart
So sing, sing a song for me,
A song of hope, a song of joy for me,
Oh sing! Sing a song for me,
A song of hope, a song of joy for me!”

Knowing what I know about the One who made your child
He’d want for you to know how she has a lovely smile
He loves to watch her laugh and play,
To sing and dance and to hear her say,
“I love you Papa God, You’re my best friend!”
And I can hear her say…

‘I want you to know that I am more than just okay
Please let the songs of heaven, fill your heart today
God wasn’t cruel to take me home, I am happy in his arms
And one day soon we’ll meet again and never be apart
So sing, sing a song for me,
A song of hope, a song of joy for me,
Yes sing! Sing a song for me,
A song of hope, a song of joy for me!”

Letting Go, a Song of Surrender

My wife Catherine is an amazing woman and a very talented singer. This is a song she wrote about trusting God in the midst of confusing or overwhelming times recognizing that God is indeed Sovereign and He is Love (see previous post). It’s a great deal easier to surrender to God when you realize you are surrendering to love!

God, who is love, is in control so we don’t have to stress and strive to control reality ourselves. We just get to partner with him and accompany him through life as we continually say (as one verse in Scripture puts it), “What’s next Papa?” It is indeed stressful and disconcerting trying to maintain control over all our circumstances. But their is freedom and profound life found in a trusting loving friendship with God. Who knows, he might just send us things we can’t handle to free us from trying to do life on our own… we were never meant to be alone.

We hope this song has inspired and blessed you. Let us know! This song is available on our “I Will Bring You Peace” album. You can download it at our Bandcamp website or on iTunes Here! or purchase the CD at our online store.

She talks in the following video about what inspired this song:

Here is Letting Go again, recorded live accompanied by the birds:
